Origen
Where it comes from
Shadow work is at once one of the most ancient and most modern spiritual practices. Shamanic traditions speak of descent into the underworld as initiation. Christian mystics described the "dark night of the soul" (Saint John of the Cross, 16th century) as necessary for awakening. In the 20th century, Carl Jung systematized the concept: the shadow is everything the conscious self rejects in itself and projects outward.
